Overview of Quantum Hardware Design: Energy, Circuits, and Metal

Zlatko K. Minev

Research talk · 2025 · Flagship Quantum Device Workshop (Advanced) · 93 pages

Uses the layers of quantum device design (layout, electromagnetic simulation, quantization, Hamiltonian, gates) to walk through a design flow, with community chips built in Qiskit Metal as examples. It then covers two quantization approaches in depth: the quasi-lumped oscillator model (LOM), which partitions a chip into cells, and the energy-participation ratio (EPR) method, including its sum rules, loss participation, and measured vs. predicted cross-Kerr. It closes with Metal's analysis library and Ansys HFSS rendering.

  • Design abstraction layers and Qiskit Metal's component library and parametrized layout
  • Landscape of quantization methods: lumped, quasi-lumped, impedance, energy
  • LOM: subsystem partitions, Maxwell capacitance matrix, dressed Hamiltonians
  • EPR: junction participation, Hamiltonian, sum rules, loss EPRs, theory vs. experiment
