Primer on Pauli Twirling, Part II

Tutorial · 2022 · 19 pages

Part of the series Primer on Pauli Twirling (tutorial); cited as one entry below.

The theory half of a Pauli-twirling primer. It works through twirling a single-qubit channel by averaging over Pauli conjugations, showing that a bit-flip channel is left unchanged while a coherent rotation is turned into a stochastic Pauli channel with a diagonal Pauli transfer matrix. A coherent over-rotation example shows the error accumulating linearly, rather than quadratically, with the number of repetitions once it is twirled.

  • Twirling as an average over Pauli-conjugated instances of a channel
  • Bit-flip channel example: invariant under the Pauli twirl
  • Coherent rotation channel: chi matrix, Pauli transfer matrix, and its diagonalization by twirling
  • Twirling a general single-qubit channel, with a refresher on Paulis and mixed states

Summary and key points drafted by a language model from the slides, not yet reviewed by me. The slides are the source.
