Superconducting Qubits 101: cQED Quantum Hardware

Zlatko K. Minev

Lecture · 2021 · QIQT Summer School · 84 pages

Part of the series Superconducting Qubits 101; cited as one entry below.

An introductory lecture on superconducting qubits that starts with the big picture of devices in the cloud and the lab, then builds the physics step by step: classical circuit laws, the LC oscillator, its quantization, and the transmon as a nonlinear oscillator made with a Josephson junction. It ends with restricting to the qubit subspace and pointers to design tools and further reading.

  • Qubits from atoms and anharmonic oscillators; the ingredients of cQED
  • Classical LC oscillator from charge, flux, Kirchhoff's laws and Hamiltonian dynamics
  • Quantum harmonic oscillator: ladder operators, wavefunctions, zero-point fluctuations
  • Transmon: Josephson junction, Kerr Hamiltonian, anharmonicity, and the two-level qubit subspace

Summary and key points drafted by a language model from the slides, not yet reviewed by me. The slides are the source.
