2.5D Circuit Quantum Electrodynamics (cQED): Whispering Gallery Modes
Motivated by combining wafer-scale fabrication with the coherence of 3D cavities, the talk shows how thin-film rings form high-Q whispering-gallery modes that keep energy in vacuum, and reviews their measured coherence and material-loss bounds. It then couples a transmon to the ring, uses an energy-participation reformulation of black-box quantization ('Energy BBQ') to compute the Hamiltonian, and presents early results on tuning cross-Kerr by qubit angle.
- Ring resonators as physical periodic boundary conditions, with conformal-map intuition
- Mode identification and bounds on thin-film Al resistance and sapphire loss tangent
- Energy participation ratios as a route from one simulation to Hamiltonian, couplings and loss
- Qubit placement around the ring for selective coupling and cross-Kerr tuning, with first device results
Summary and key points drafted by a language model from the slides, not yet reviewed by me. The slides are the source.
