Superconducting Whispering Gallery Mode Resonators

Zlatko K. Minev

Research talk · 2013 · APS March Meeting · 11 pages

A short conference talk on whispering-gallery-mode resonators formed by stacked thin-film aluminum rings on sapphire. It identifies differential and common modes, reports high internal quality factors and long energy relaxation at single-photon powers, and uses temperature-dependent frequency shifts with field participation ratios to bound film and dielectric losses.

  • Motivation: combining wafer scalability with 3D-cavity quality, and testing materials at single-photon level
  • Differential vs. common modes, with most field energy in vacuum for the differential mode
  • Measured internal Q of about 3.4×10^6 and T1 of about 180 µs for one mode
  • Bounds on aluminum surface resistance and sapphire loss tangent; plans for qubit integration

Summary and key points drafted by a language model from the slides, not yet reviewed by me. The slides are the source.
