Whispering Gallery Modes

Research talk · 2012 · 25 pages

Introduces a modular two-ring resonator in which a photon circulates on a ring, giving degenerate modes whose fields can be confined in vacuum or in a substrate. The talk covers mode identification, power-independent internal quality factors, energy-relaxation and phase-coherence measurements, and how surface impedance and participation ratios set loss bounds for thin-film aluminum and sapphire at the single-photon level.

  • Photon-on-a-ring concept, degenerate modes, and common vs. differential modes
  • Modular sample holder for testing metals or dielectrics
  • Quality factor vs. power, T1 from ring-down, and phase coherence analysis
  • Dissipation budget: surface impedance, aluminum film loss, sapphire loss tangent
