Superconducting Whispering Gallery Modes

Zlatko K. Minev

Research talk · 2012 · 30 pages

Proposes confining microwave fields in vacuum between patterned aluminum rings on two wafers inside a cylindrical cavity, keeping fields away from lossy dielectric and copper walls. It works through the geometry and mounting, then simulates how mode frequency and Q depend on ring radius, thickness, inner-circle offset and misalignment, separating good whispering-gallery modes from parasitic ones.

  • Goals: wafer-scalable cQED, flux bias, measuring thin-film Q
  • Ring transmission-line picture with two degenerate whispering-gallery modes
  • Practical issues: wafer spacing, springs and indium seal, thermalization, vortices
  • Simulated frequency and Q vs. radius, thickness, offset, and alignment
